What is the Driving Theory Test?
The Driving Theory Test is a mandatory, computer-based test established by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). It tests a learner driver’s knowledge of major road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices.
This is an important initial step for every learner in the UK, the foundation upon which responsible driving knowledge is built. You are required to pass the theory test prior to booking your practical driving test, which tests your driving skills on the road.
Driving Theory Test Overview
The test is divided into two sections: a multiple-choice and a hazard perception section. You are required to pass both to pass the theory test.
Multiple-Choice Section
This part includes 50 questions based on the Highway Code and general driving knowledge. You’ll begin with instructions and a chance to try a practice question to familiarise yourself with the format.
Hazard Perception Section
This level has 14 video clips presenting different road situations. In each of these videos, you have to identify emerging hazards by clicking the mouse as soon as they emerge. An emerging hazard is something that will trigger you to change direction or speed—say, a pedestrian crossing the road.
There are 15 hazards in the clips. You can score up to five points for every hazard, depending on your response time. You’ll see an instructional video before beginning that tells you what will happen.
Passing the theory test shows you have the skills and knowledge necessary to be a safe and vigilant driver on UK roads.
